In December 2016 the former Recreation Hotel (which was known as the Old Homestead Inn for many
years before that) became “The Recreation”, and it has rapidly developed into one of the best dining
establishments north of the Yarra. Last month The Good Food Guide 2019 recognised The Recreation’s
quality by awarding the restaurant “One Hat”.
The Recreation is the work of Steven Nelson, Joe Durrant and Mark Protheroe. Prior to becoming chef
at The Recreation, Steven was chef at Bistro Gitan for five years, and before that he worked at Jacques
Reymond. Joe was formerly restaurant manager at Grossi Florentino, where he worked alongside Mark,
who was the sommelier. The three have created a combination of excellent food made from delicious
fresh produce, a very good wine list (and they allow BYO with very reasonable corkage!), all presented
in an easy-going and friendly style, and housed in the 1860s charm of the renovated old hotel.
The Recreation has quickly become a regular for the folk of Fitzroy North / Clifton Hill, and especially
for WFSV members who live in the area, who can be frequently found dining here.
Vikki Tonissen and Steven Adlard, the organisers of the evening, have matched a range of excellent
wines to the delicious food at The Recreation. The Society has the entire restaurant for the dinner, and
we therefore would like to see as many members as possible (with guests that you would like to
introduce to the Society) at the function, to welcome The Recreation into the fold of fine establishments
that the Society enjoys!
