Matteo’s is a Melbourne restaurant institution.  Now spanning more than 20 years, Matteo’s has consistent been rated by the Age Good Food Guide as either a one hat or two restaurants. The food style is a French Japanese fusion combining European techniques with Japanese ingredients.

Matteo’s new Head Chef Rhys Blackley originally began his career at Matteo’s in 2006, when he was 21 years of age. Over the next three years he worked his way up to Sous Chef, working under Chef Brendan McQueen. When the opportunity to travel arose, Rhys began eating his way around Europe and the UK.  Upon returning to Melbourne, Rhys joined the acclaimed Circa, The Prince as Senior Chef de Partie. Here he worked under the tutelage of industry heavyweights Paul Wilson and Jake Nicholson.

When renowned chef Ashly Hicks stepped up as Head Chef, Rhys moved into the role of Sous Chef. Together they took Circa from a 1 to 2 hatted restaurant, and in March 2016 Rhys was promoted to Circa Head Chef.  Rhys sees his style of cookery as extremely produce driven, modern and with a real nod to traditional techniques and flavour combinations.

Richard O’Brien and Robert Worthington have selected an excellent collection of wines to match some of Matteo’s signature dishes.
